There are both national and state time standards. The purpose of time standards is to motivate swimmers to improve.

state standards

Illinois state standards are used to set qualifying times for state meets. There are two levels of state meets: an "A" meet for swimmers with "A" times, and a Junior Olympics (JO) meet for swimmers with JO times.

  • Illinois regional "A" meet: The A meet is only held in the winter (typically in late February). To qualify for the A meet, the swimmer must have a time equal to or better than the A standard time but less than the Age Group championship (formerly JO) time.

  • Age Group championship meet (formerly "JO" meet): One Age Group championship (AG) meet is held in the winter (typically March) and is conducted in a short course (25-yard) pool. The other AG meet is held in the summer and is conducted in a long-course (50-meter) pool.

Below are links to the state standards. During the fall and winter, all of the Flying Fish meets are in short course pools, i.e., 25-yard pools. In the summer, most of our meets are in 50-meter long pools; for these pools the long course meter times are applicable.
